The client

Toyota Insurance Services offers a range of vehicle insurance products to suit the diverse needs of clients and customers across Europe. The products, which are underwritten by Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Europe, include third party liability insurance, comprehensive insurance and options tailored for new and used vehicles, providing high-quality services with repairs carried out by Toyota-trained technicians. The company’s mission is to take customer mobility to new levels while promoting sustainable practices through its insurance services.

The challenge

The project focused on the development of online insurance services for Toyota and Lexus cars by increasing sales of personalised insurance policies on the company’s national websites. The client aimed to achieve this by making auto insurance part of the vehicle purchasing process. It also involved unifying the technical architecture and user experience across the national Toyota and Lexus websites, along with integrating the application with other systems, including insurance companies’ external platforms.

The project presented the MakoLab team with a number of challenges. The first was the integration of a wide range of technological systems on various European markets. Given the diversity of those markets, not to mention customer preferences and behaviours, creating a unified user experience proved to be particularly complex. It was also crucial to ensure that integrating the car insurance application did not complicate the vehicle purchasing process in any way at all.

Another of the challenges was ensuring that the integration on Toyota’s websites was consistent and generic. At the same time, it was essential for the repeatability to facilitate the rapid deployment of the application on other markets, suitably adapted and without generating excessive integration costs.

An equally vital aspect of the project was building and implementing the proper measures for keeping customers’ data completely secure

The goal

Our goal was to increase the number of insurance policies sold by improving the purchasing process on the manufacturers’ national websites and providing customers with personalised insurance quotes while they are configuring a new vehicle or searching for a used one.

We also set out to expand the offer of services across a vehicle’s life cycle, which translates into better mobility for the customer and a reduction in the cost of owning and running a car.

The solution

The solution included creating an insurance calculator for Toyota and Lexus vehicles and integrating it with the company’s national websites in twelve markets across Europe. This creates a seamless procedure for potential customers to obtain auto insurance quotes while they are configuring their vehicles, significantly shortening the process and improving the overall experience.

The technological aspects of the solution included integrating the various system levels using REST interfaces, OpenAPI specifications, a JavaScript library and web components to harmonise front- and back-end communications with external vendors. Unifying the technical architecture and user experience makes the platform flexible, which is essential to its development across various European markets.

At the same time, we leveraged our domain expertise and the technical solutions to ensure the feasibility of quickly implementing top-quality versions of the application on new markets.
