Inventory management systems using RFID
One alternative to traditional barcode scanning consists in mobile stock-checking by utilising RFID technologies. Utilising a mobile scanner (i.e. a device capable of reading RFID tags such as a smartphone) items are tagged and can then be subsequently scanned through the use of appropriate RFID software. The main benefit of employing an RFID-based scanning system is that the tags can be read from a much further distance than barcodes- eliminating the need to move the scanner to each item individually. With this technology, it is possible to scan up to 100 tags per second from a single given location. What is more, concealed objects can also be read without issue, such as those placed in lockers or with tags facing away from the scanners. In practice this means that an entire inventory can be scanned in a matter of moments, with minimal chance of error. Makolab’s solution not only saves on time but also considerably on costs.

A MakoLab solution for stocktaking
Providing RFID tags and a mobile app for reading the tags is all part of the solution offered by Makolab. The Stock Talk app provides solutions to a variety of processes for inventory management:
- Automatic importing of data concerning the tangible assets and inventory of a company or property (popular file formats supported)
- Recording RFID tags ready for printing
- Reading RFID tags – including QR code formats
- Registration and delivery of inventory data
Whilst Stock Talk works beautifully as an independent application, the true performance of the technology in registration and data exchange functionality is augmented though the apps’ integration with property management software packages, such as Makolab’s management module platform ColDis.
In addition, Makolab’s Stock Talk app has been designed to operate on smartphones that make use of NFC technology. When it comes to compiling an inventory list, this technology can be effectively used for reading RFID tags. Such a solution means that companies no longer need to equip their staff with additional RFID scanners, instead being able to utilise any NFC-supported mobile devices.
